Whenever new Chechen kids' camps
come into our city we ask the adults and directors what the kids'
greatest physical needs are. Without fail they answer "shoes
and socks." Most kids run around in a local type of cheap
rubber sandal/slipper. We try to give shoes and socks to the
orphans at as many camps as possible. The camp workers record
each kids' shoe sizes, along with name and gender. Once all
the sizes are gained, we make a huge trip to the market to purchase
nice shoes for around $5 to $6 a peace, along with a load of socks.
We also give each orphan an entry level book presenting animals
engaged in some moral themes from the gospels. The book is
translated into Chechen and even has application verses in the back.
A joy to give a practical blessing to a truly overlooked race of
kids growing up in wartimes. |

The book pictured is illustrated
stories from the Torah, Prophets, and Gospels, including many
parables. This new, culturally sensitive translation uses many
Muslim names and terms making it easier to bridge the gap and focus
on the message. This particular book is an easy read designed
for the whole family. We have purchased 1,000 at $2 a piece to
give to anyone truly desiring one. We also have access to a
Muslim language-sensitive 'Green Book' scriptures, accurately
translated for those wanting the Word. In addition there are
various smaller books and pamphlets such as: the Gospel of Luke with
the testimonies of professional athletes scattered throughout; sport
specific brochures we design for various camps or tours we are
hosting. Also in the works is a translation of the book
entitled 'Jesus and Mohammed' that focuses on their respective lives
and core teachings. |
This Spring we put together a massive program to visit all of the
orphanages in our republic (and a couple outside of it). Through
some donations we were able to prepare hundreds of gift gabs for the
kids. We also were able to purchase larger items the orphanages
needed - like a refrigerator, an inhalator, a large screen TV (so 70
deaf children are able to read movie subtitles), sports equipment,
etc. With the help of 2 groups visiting form the U.S. we held
programs for each group including a variety of games, activities,
testimonies, puppet shows and gifts. Gift bags for boys included:
toy cars/men, soccer posters, stickers, chess/checkers or dominoes,
etc. For girls: brushes, mirrors, socks, stuffed animals, and more.
For everyone: calculators, toothbrushes and paste, candy, sticker,
pens, key chains, gum, etc. Unbelievably, each bag cost let than $2.

| At the height of kids camp activity, there are
literally thousand of Chechens (and other people groups) at various
locations in the city for three-week stays. Amidst all that we try
to do with these groups, two of our most impactful are showing films
and holding a type of kids Olympic events. 'Narnia' has been an
incredible resource for introducing spiritual truths through
allegory. The kids love this film, especially when they see the
enormous screen made with our projector. Also shown are 'Jesus Film
for Kids", and various animated Disney movies and Gospel stories.
Usually we have one of us open or close the film with a few words.
Kids Games involves a 5-15 teams with assigned leaders. Team names,
banners and chants are created as the rules are explained and the
games begin at six event stations: tug-o-war, ball relays, bowling,
hoola hoop and water bucket races, etc. A parachute, mascots,
narrator and a sound system add to the events. We act to a NT
parable drama, have group discussion time, and then prepare a slide
show of pictures taken that day to show them before an evening music
an film program. We involve many friends in helping lead these
times. It is impactful for them as well. |

The burden and vision for this enormous project was
birthed out of watching over 500 kids at a local camp with nowhere
to play except a parking lot and a small grassy area. Below
the hotel was a plot of land filled with old concrete, wood and
brick ruins, trash, ditches and drug paraphernalia. Seeing
past all of that, we envisioned the finest basketball and soccer
complex in the city. Sharing the vision of the gift itself -
the community building effort, and the overall ministry tool for the
Chechens as well as locals - people stateside got involved to get it
off the ground. We finished the construction and most of the
landscaping in early summer and since then it has been packed with
kids. The opening ceremony was a basketball clinic with the
teams we have been working with for the past 2 to 3 years.
Soon we would like to add benches outside, lights for evening games,
playground items in the grassy areas for smaller kids, some nice
walk ways, and additional landscaping. Thus far in the work we
have had over 100 friends volunteer! |
